You don't have to run faster than the bear

There is a well-known cartoon where two guys see a bear and one guy starts putting on running shoes. The other guy looks at him and says, " Why are you doing that? You'll never outrun that bear." And the other guy says, " I don't have to outrun that bear, I only have to outrun you."

This is an illustration of economist Steven Landsburg's communal stream principle. In security, we don't have to outrun the attackers, we only have to outrun other targets of similar interest to an attacker.
