Here's a thought: If you really want to keep a secret...

... I recommend against a press release, blog post, podcast, youtube video, public interviews, and comments. I know this is a bit radical, but I'm just sayin'...

Sort of like - the people who would really have to kill you if they told you something are smart enough not to tell you in the first place...

On Multiplying Ordinal, err INTERVAL Numbers I believe it is fairly common among some of my security metrics friends to cringe at the thought of performing mathematical operations when applying a numeric scale in a risk assessment process that assigns, say, a 1 to 5 value to threats, vulns, and asset value. The common reasoning is that these are ordinal numbers and ordinal numbers can't be multiplied (in this case). Quick background - numbers can be used in (at least) four different ways - nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. As you move up this ladder, more operations are available to you. Is there a (patent) storm brewing in the UTM market? Deep Nines has apparently been successful in defending its patent in court - a jury awarded them $18m from McAfee. It seems like there was a bit more than infringement here - the initial press release indicated that McAfee was claiming that it owned a similar patent. That said, I can't help but wonder whether this will give the UTM market new meaning... [Hat tip: Security Incite]
